Welcome to Arkaba Station

Arkaba station

Arkaba Station is situated 400kms north of Adelaide in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia. It is one of the most picturesque properties in Australia. The beautiful mountains in the heart of the Flinders Ranges have an air of mystery about them because of their inaccessibility. Until recently they have been visited by few people apart from occasional shepherds, sporadic pastoralists, miners and bushwalkers.

Arkaba Station is one of the oldest pastoral properties in South Australia, established in 1851 by the Brown Brothers, two English Doctors. The Homestead and stone woolshed were built in 1856 and the woolshed is still in use today.

Arkaba Station is a sheep station of 100 sq. miles carrying about 7000 merino sheep. Shearing takes place once a year and people are welcomed to visit the historic stone woolshed at that time.

The property is surrounded by the most magnificent Ranges – The Elder Range, The Chace Range and the southern wall of Wilpena Pound. It has some of the most stunning river red gums, slate creeks and steep escarpments. Wilpena Pound is the Icon of the Flinders Ranges.

The Moralana Scenic Drive also passes through the centre of Arkaba with the Elder Range on one side and Wilpena Pound on the other. People say it is the prettiest drive in the Flinders. The London to Sydney car rally travels along it and is has already gained an international reputation as one of the best rally drives in the world.

Dean Rasheed who lives at Arkaba, is passionate about the area, its history and geology and loves sharing his knowledge with his guests. His wife, Lizzie, arrived in the Flinders 30 years ago from England and adapted to the outback way of life.
